THE PUMP BAR

21+ OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK

Walk by the roll-up service bay doors to a question mark-shaped bar while classic cult cinema plays on flatscreens overhead. Choose from 16 local and specialty beers on tap, over 50 domestic and import craft bottles and whiskeys made by Southerners or Scotsmen whose names you can’t pronounce. If you’re feeling frugal, grab a can of PBR and a shot of something stiff for five bucks. Head on out to the sprawling 9,000 sq ft. patio area to settle in with a Tiki cocktail around a roaring gas fire pit and watch a grindhouse movie on the wall. Slide around back to the gaming area to make new friends over a game of cornhole. Celebrate victory, defeat, or whatever with a visit to the food truck for fresh and affordable eats outside the culinary norm.

History

The Pump Bar began life in 1929 as a Texaco service station opened by Oklahoma native and professional baseball player “Chili Mac.” In 1953 Elmer Gentry bought the business and christened it “Elmer’s Texaco,” where it grew as a social hub of neighborhood activity. For 35 years Elmer gave odd jobs to at-risk youths and was always ready to help a neighbor. In 1978 the lights went out at 2425 N. Walker until the long-neglected space was given new life and a stylish facelift by TAP Architecture. On December 17, 2014, the service station officially reopened as The Pump Bar.
